The secret to a good night’s sleep? Have an orgasm.

Sleep is all the buzz nowadays. Endless content and research tell us that sleep is the key to good health. I've even heard couples with matching Oura rings compare their sleep patterns over coffee.

Millions of people have read the book, "Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams," by Matthew Walker. And Arianna Huffington of The Huffington Post often shares tips on sleeping better. She suggests leaving your phone outside your bedroom, by the way. That's how sleep-obsessed we've become.

But here's my secret— there is no better sleeping pill than having an orgasm before you sleep. So, whether it's sex or a solo play session before you sleep, the cliche stands: you'll sleep like a baby.

What's the connection between orgasm and sleep?

Orgasms can make you sleep better as they trigger the release of feel-good hormones, oxytocin, and prolactin. It also releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers. These hormones help keep anxiety, physical pain, and stress at bay.

A 2019 study by the Frontiers in Public Health journal titled 'Sex and Sleep: Perceptions of Sex as a Sleep Promoting Behavior in the General Adult Population' states that the release of oxytocin, prolactin, and the inhibition of cortisol following orgasm may prompt a sleep facilitatory effect. This means that women and men can experience the state of falling asleep right after an orgasm.

Think of the after-effect of an orgasm as similar to being in a hammock, cradled, or even getting a head rub.

How about vice versa?

Getting good sleep has a lot of benefits for your sexual health. It can increase sexual libido and the ability of women to get wet. On the other hand, when a woman is tired and sleep deprived, it can lessen natural lubrication. So for women who want to be wet down there, clock your sleep hours.

For men, a lack of sleep and disrupted sleep have also been linked to a higher risk of erectile dysfunction. The body is smart in that way that it will signal when it's getting tired.

The bottom line is: sex and pleasure need energy. And to get energy, you need sleep. So, don't skimp on this!

Convinced? Try it yourself. Here are a few ways I recommend you achieve that state of bliss before sleep:

Lights off and take a hot bath before bed.  Before you do any of the below, prepare your environment. Drop your body temperature, which will make you feel sleepy. And having a dark room allows the secretion of melatonin. You want to get ready to go to bed.

Have a wind-down sex session with your partner. But stick to a schedule.  Every person is different. Some prefer morning sex. And others like the night. I've also heard that men prefer the morning because they get too tired at night.

For night owls like me, here's my tip: give your partner a massage and start an hour or two before your usual bedtime. You'll want enough time to explore each other's bodies.

For extra oomph, use some lavender oil for the calming effect. Think of the oil as that pillow spray people use.

Remember to finish before midnight, as the point is to sleep early and deeply. I know how sex can excite people, and it's easy to stay up all night exploring kinks or fantasies. But save that for a weekend away.

This session should last 30 minutes or less. You don't want both of you waking up groggy!

Try masturbating with your hands.  I like to use my hands if I have a bit more time. This way treats yourself to solo time at the end of a busy day. You can light up a candle, read a few erotic stories or listen to some audio porn beforehand. And if you're the type of person that loves to journal, write an erotic scenario.

Use a pleasure toy.  Sometimes, one needs to go straight to sleep. And that's where a vibrator comes in handy. The Bobble is my ever-reliable companion to help me sleep. And if I like a different feeling, I switch it up with the Chinchilla or Deuce. The three are my constant bedside table accessories.

If you're one of those people who understand the benefits of an orgasm to one's sleep, then you already know what I'm talking about. But for those new to this, try it for a week or two and observe the wonders of orgasm for your sleep health.
