10 Fun Facts About The Penis

I was a late bloomer in the bedroom. I saw my first naked man at 19. And when I saw him erect, I had no idea what to do with the penis. I was worried I'd break it.

Recently, on the Sexytime podcast, Dr. Jimmy Songco discussed all things penis. Unfortunately, not many are familiar with the role of a "urologist." Urologists deal with the male organs, including the penis, testes, scrotum, and prostate. (The recommendation is to go to a urologist once a year.)

From the episode, we posted a poll; how well do you know the penis?

The listeners responded:
51% not much
35% a lot
13% clueless

For the majority of Filipinos, we know so little about it. Even at school, sex-ed doesn't go too deep. So, here are some unique facts about the penis that will make anyone more knowledgeable:

1. There are different degrees of erection.
In the podcast, Dr. Jimmy makes an analogy of grade 1 to 4 erection.
1 – Tofu: soft and incapable of penetration
2 – Peeled Banana: stronger but still sub-optimal for penetration
3 – Unpeeled Banana: capable of penetration but not optimally hard
4 – Cucumber: what every man wants!

Anything grade 3 and below can be considered an Erectile Dysfunction (either the inability to achieve a grade 4 erection or the inability to maintain an erection during intercourse).

2. The perineum is a magical spot.
I've heard of this magical spot during a bachelorette. They said to press on it as you go down on a man, and he should feel different sensations.

The perineum is the skin patch located between the anus and the scrotum. When touched, massaged, or engaged in sexual play, it can offer plenty of enjoyment.

3. You can break the penis.
So, I had every right to be worried. A broken penis is called a penile fracture. A bending injury occurs when a membrane called the tunica albuginea tears. The tunica albuginea surrounds the corpora cavernosa, which is the spongy tissue inside the penis that fills up with blood during an erection.

When the membrane tears, the blood that's usually confined to this space leaks out into other tissues, causing bruising and swelling. Recovering from a fracture usually involves stitches. It can happen while on reverse cowgirl or when a woman sits on an erect penis.

4. You can cook with semen.
I first came across this strange cookbook on semen on Amazon. Semen is more than just sperm. Semen is about 96 percent water, 2 percent sperm, fructose (which nourishes sperm), vitamin C (which helps keep sperm healthy), sodium bicarbonate (which protects sperm from the acidic environment of a vagina), various proteins and enzymes, and minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. So it is nutritious.

5. The average male orgasm lasts 6 seconds.
It doesn't take very long for a guy to finish his orgasm. Women, on the other hand, have orgasms that last for an average of 23 seconds.

6. There are ways to train the penis not to finish too quickly.
Practice makes perfect. One way to try is to insert the penis into the vagina and not move. Just let the penis get used to the environment. You can also try pinching the top to prevent him cumming right away. Or you can also try edging, which is sexual stimulation and stopping just before the point of orgasm.

7. Cornflakes were invented to prevent masturbation.
Dr. John Harvey Kellogg invented the breakfast cereal cause he thought plain foods would stop Americans from masturbating. In the end, it didn't.

8. Men can have 3 to 5 erections every night, mainly during REM sleep.
This occurrence is called "nocturnal penile tumescence." There is no proper explanation for why this happens. One theory is that it prevents bed wetting, as a man can't urinate when the penis is erect.

9. There is the 'first erection' and a 'final erection.'
Some babies exit the womb with an erection. Or you can even see this during the ultrasound. No one is quite sure why, but it might be a way of testing body functions.

There is also called "angel lust" or a terminal erection, which happens in the moments after death. This erection is common in people who have died from hanging or gunshot wounds to the head.

10. Men will benefit from lubricants too.
A lubricant helps heighten arousal and increase sensations during sex, making it more enjoyable. Some men don't think they need it, but once they try it, it elevates the sexual experience.
